NONGOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATIONS
Exchanges and contacts with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) constitute an important element in the work of WHO. A special feature is that such exchanges are developed on a one-on-one basis, built upon shared mutual interests, and take place between an NGO and a WHO programme. The Department of External Cooperation and Partnerships (previously the Division of Interagency Affairs) and, in the case of national and regional NGOs, counterparts in the WHO Regional Offices, endeavour to facilitate and coordinate contacts between NGOs and appropriate technical programmes.
This approach to the development of relations is based on resolution WHA40.25 containing the Principles governing relations between the World Health Organization and nongovernmental organizations. The Principles set out the objectives for WHO's collaboration with NGOs, the types of relations at the global level and their development, criteria for the admission of NGOs into official relations with WHO, procedure for admitting NGOs into official relations with WHO, relations with NGOs at the regional and national levels, and the privileges and responsibilities of NGOs in their relationship with WHO.
Over time informal exchanges may lead to the development of formal relations between WHO and NGOs. The Directory of nongovernmental organizations in official relations with the World Health Organization provides information about the structure and activities of NGOs in official relations, summary descriptions of their activities and joint collaboration with WHO, as well as the names of focal points in the NGO and within WHO.
